St Catherine

Our Aim

The Society of St. Catherine seeks to nurture the intimate connection between the worship of the Church and her teaching of Sacred Doctrine. We are committed to the development of the Church's theological voice in the midst of a postmodern culture, working, through its activities, to support those addressing and understanding the various issues that Catholics currently face, especially in institutions of higher education. The Society emphasises the Church's sacred traditions, helping to ensure that future generations of Catholics understand and experience those traditions that are at the foundation of the Catholic Church.

The Society is committed to fostering faith through lively intellectual enquiry. Through conferences, colloquia and other events, the Society grapples with these difficult questions within the context of the Church’s Sacred Liturgy. The results of these scholarly enquiries are published through a sponsored series with T&T Clark (Continuum), SCM-Canterbury Press and Notre Dame University Press.

The Society works by:

  • Grounding all intellectual enquiry in the love of God and in the Church’s Sacred Liturgy, especially in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
  • Sponsoring research fellows and promoting international collaboration in Catholic theology
  • Promoting Catholic faith and theology in institutions of higher education through working groups, academic conferences and focused dialogues
  • Supporting clergy seeking to deepen their understanding of the Sacred Liturgy in its traditional forms

All of the Society's work is undertaken in dialogue and collaboration with the hierarchy. Our patrons, the Most Rev'd. Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Birmingham, and Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor, Archbishop of Westminster, have emphasised the importance of this mission.
